Sculpting Workshops 2017

ZimArt’s has been hosting sculpting workshops at the Rice Lake Gallery since 2006.
Each year a Zimbabwean sculptor, represented by ZimArt, is invited to Canada to be the artist-in-residence for the season. During their stay in Canada the artists lead sculpting workshops at the gallery.

ZimArt’s 2017 artist-in-residence is Zimbabwean sculptor Rufaro Ngoma. Rufaro is a gifted and patient mentor and enjoys sharing his expertise.

Students work outside under tents, using only hand tools, and learning and applying traditional techniques for finishing and polishing the stone. Former participants have described the workshop as “a magical experience” in an “inspirational setting”.

The five-day adult workshops are open to all levels of participants from beginners to experienced carvers. (Participants must be at least 18 years old.)  Registration is limited to twelve participants per workshop which allows a lot of time for one-on-one assistance and mentoring. All basic tools are provided but students can bring their own too. Zimbabwean stone is available for purchase or you can bring your own.

We have space still available in the following Adult Workshop:
Adult Workshop: July 24 - 28, 2017, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday to Friday)

The Two-day Introductory Workshops  give participants the opportunity to learn the basics and see if stone sculpting is something they would like to explore in more depth in the future. (Participants must be at least 14 years old.) Registration is limited to eight participants to allow for one-on-one mentoring.
