Sculpting Workshops 2018

ZimArt has been hosting sculpting workshops at the Rice Lake Gallery since 2006.

Each year a Zimbabwean sculptor, represented by ZimArt, is invited to Canada to be the artist-in-residence for the season. During their stay in Canada the artists lead sculpting workshops at the gallery.

ZimArt's 2018 artist-in-residence is 44 year-old Tutani Mgabazi. Tutani comes from a family of stone sculptors dating back to the First Generation. He is an accomplished, internationally exhibited artist who has led sculpting workshops in Germany, South Africa and the United States.

The Five-Day  Workshops are open to all levels of participants from beginners to experienced carvers. (Participants must be at least 18 years old.)  Registration is limited to ten participants per workshop which allows plenty of time for one-on-one assistance and mentoring.

The two-day Introductory Workshops will give participants the opportunity to learn the basics and see if stone sculpting is something they would like to explore in more depth in the future. (Participants must be at least 15 years old.) Registration is limited to seven participants.

Students work outside under tents, using only hand tools, and learning and applying traditional techniques for finishing and polishing the stone. Former participants have described the workshop as “a magical experience” in an “inspirational setting”.

The goal, for all the workshops, is to build on the skills which each participant brings to the experience. The primary objective is to make the creative process dynamic and challenging. You will create your own stone carving guided by the mentor/artist in a collaborative supportive environment.

The Gallery has a range of Zimbabwean stone for sale, in a variety of sizes, colours and hardness, and students are able to select a piece suited to their skill level.
